Peafowl are shockingly common in Tiruppur, the city where my family's garment factory is located. They are nearly as common as crows and would probably be more widespread if they were smaller. They don't like the mid-day heat, but if you drive around a bit you're guaranteed to see them in the early morning and evening.
They adapt well to urbanization because they eat pretty much anything, and they are especially protected in India because they're the national bird and a symbol of the Hindu god Skanda/Murugan (Shiva's son and Ganesh's brother).
I have even been lucky enough to see peachicks grow up as there have been families near the factory and the apartment I was staying in. They are very cute and resemble little chickens.
Whenever I visit Tiruppur for an extended period of time, I try to total the number of individual peafowl I've seen during the trip. The last count (over roughly 3 months) was 317!
