This design was inspired by traditional folk art designs of lotuses. I like that it includes the seed pods and leaves, which makes it feel more like a depiction of lotuses in nature than just the abstract symbol of a lotus.
Part of the fun of making a design like this is figuring out how to make it look best when it has to tile seamlessly for an all over print. Adobe Illustrator has a pattern-making tool that makes it easy, but you still have to play around with it so it doesn't look too obviously tiled.
Lotuses are, of course, sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism. I personally like how enlightenment is symbolized by the lotus growing from the dark, dank muck of the pond and breaking out of the water and blooming.
This photo is from a market in Madurai (one of the cities in Tamil Nadu where my family is from). This stall is selling plates of offerings to take to the temple. As you can see, there are also coconuts, bananas, and other items. After the fruit is offered to the deities, you can eat it.
